Andrew Gunnell is an Australian artist with a practice located at the intersections of Print, Photo and Paint.
Recent prints and paintings depict landscape and atmospheric conditions to explore the mediating effects of contemporary image technologies on representations of landscape. In the studio, he contrasts traditional and slow techniques with contemporary and rapid techniques, to visualise potential influences of mobility and duration on a perception. In the ongoing Interspace series, a painting method is used which is informed by a mechanical print-based process that mimics a photographic presence. Viewers are encouraged to decipher filtered landscapes, with the aim of encouraging a contemplation of the resonances of digital imaging on perceptions of landscape and atmosphere and the potential effects of compression and expansion in the realms between people and environment.
Andrew has participated in over 70 solo and group exhibitions. Recent exhibitions include Moving Still, (Solo), Site Eight Gallery, RMIT University, Melbourne. The 2023 Experimental Print Prize, Castlemaine Art Museum. And Printmaking Today:2nd Edition, Soemardja Gallery, Centre of Art & Design, Institute of Technology, Bandung, Indonesia.
His work is held in several public and private collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Asia Pacific Photographic Archive, the Hong Kong Open Print Workshop, and the State Library of Victoria.
Andrew is the Print Studio Leader and Lecturer in the School of Art at RMIT University.
